An Introduction to English Education

The course aims at providing a comprehensive introduction
to the profession of teaching English. The course covers the
areas that are considered critical to successful language
instruction: teaching English language skills, standard lesson
types, and classroom testing.
English Speaking I, II (2)
The course gives students an opportunity to speak the English
they have learned. Students build their confidence and fluency
in speaking English through interactive activities.
English Reading I, II (3)
The course aims at learning two basic reading skills: skimming
and scanning. The course also aims at studying the theory
of English reading and enhancing English reading comprehension
ability through intensive and systematic reading practice.
Introduction to English linguistics (3)
The course focuses on the scientific study of the English
language. By studying English phonology, morphology, syntax,
semantics, pragmatics and varieties of English, students are
equipped with comprehensive knowledge of English linguistics
and English language, necessary for English teachers.
English Listening I, II (2)
The course aims at enhancing students' English listening comprehension
ability. Students practice English listening intensively and
systematically using a variety of authentic materials.
English Vocabulary (2)
The course is designed to help students improve and expand
their English vocabulary in broad topics. The course helps
students learn not only the meanings of words but how they
are used in context.
English Writing I, II (2)
The course familiarizes students with the writing process
in English, from note-taking and pre-writing to editing and
revising. Students gain experience in writing a variety of
compositions.
History of the English Language (3)
The course is designed to study the history of the English
language in various aspects - the changes in phonological,
morphological, syntactical, and semantical aspects. Students
also study the difference between British and American English
languages.
Audio-Visual English Education (3)
The course focuses on the study of how to use audio-visual
materials for English education. Students approach English
language teaching practically using audio, video, and cd-rom
titles to enhance English communicative competence.
English Phonetics: Theory and Practice (3)
The course is designed to provide students with the knowledge
base of the English sound system. This course further aims
at equipping students with good English pronunciation as prospective
English teachers using a variety of pronunciation practice
materials.
Teaching British and American Culture (3)
Students explore the cultural information on English-speaking
countries by engaging in a variety of classroom activities
relevant to culture teaching. Students will develop keen insight
into English language and prepare to integrate cultural components
into language classroom.
Curriculum Development in ELT (3)
The course aims at helping the students understand the basic
principles in developing the English language curriculum and
providing them with tools and techniques for analysing the
syllabuses with which they are going to work.
English Language Acquisition (3)
The course focuses on the theories and research in second
language acquisition. The similarities and differences of
first and second language acquisition, variables affecting
second language learning, and developmental learner languages
are studied and discussed in depth.
Introduction to English Literature (3)
The course focuses on the introduction to a wide
genre of English literature including poetry, novels, essays,
and plays. Students read British and American literary works
in depth and analyze them in order to gain a general understanding
of British and American cultures, necessary for English teachers.
English Education and Computer (3)
The course is designed to provide students with information
on utilizing computer for effective English language teaching.
The course includes various techniques such as how to interact
with other English teachers and students from around the world,
gather class material, read the latest journal articles, access
language learning software. The course gets students connected
to the Web and helps them create their own Web page.
Practicum in TEFL
The course helps teachers-to-be build a repertoire of classroom
techniques that are firmly embedded in well-established principles
of language acquisition. The emphasis throughout is on language
teaching practice. Theoretical issues do not receive undue
emphasis in the course.
English Syntax (3)
Students learn Chomsky's theory of Generative Grammar and,
on the basis of it, how to analyze English syntactic structures.
Students are guided to develop keen insights into English
syntactic analysis.
Teaching Reading and Writing in English (3)
In the course students study the theory and basic skills related
to English reading and writing by practicing reading and writing
extensively. Students also learn how to teach English reading
and writing in secondary school classrooms.
English Teaching Methodology (3)
The course is designed to provide a detailed account of English
language teaching methodologies. The course deals with origins
of the teaching methodologies, related theories of language
and learning, syllabus design, classroom activities, roles
of the teacher and the learner, instructional materials, and
teaching procedures.
Readings of British and American Literature (3)
Students read British and American literary works and analyze
them in order to gain a profound understanding of British
and American cultures, necessary for prospective English teachers.
Classroom English
The course trains students to conduct classes in English.
The students will learn practical English "teacher-talk"
and use this language in model classroom situations.
Materials and Methods in TEFL
Curriculum and contents of English textbooks for secondary
school English education in Korea are studied. The course
also deals with principles of organizing secondary English
textbooks along with teaching materials and methodologies.
The course of study includes the area of English education
policy and the changes of the curriculum over the years.
Teaching English Grammar (3)
Students study parts of English grammar and how to teach them
effectively in secondary school English classes. The course
helps students understand the structures of the English language
in depth.
Teaching Listening and Speaking in English (3)
The course is designed to help students understand the nature
of oral communication and expose them to a variety of techniques
frequently used to teach English listening and speaking skills
in classroom settings. Some of the listening and speaking
teaching skills and techniques are practiced through class
presentations.
English Testing (3)
In the course a number of fundamental concepts related to
testing and many examples of tests that the students can adapt
and use in the classroom are treated. The students are required
to take part in activities evaluating different kinds of tests
and formulating similar tests for their own purposes.
English Communication (3)
The course is designed to help students enhance their basic
communicative competence in an integrative way. By actively
participating in classroom activities, students improve the
ability to express themselves in English accurately and fluently.
English Speech (2)
The course cultivates the students' ability to speak publicly
in English. Students learn effective style and delivery as
they present their own speeches to a classroom audience.
English Discussion (2)
In the course students are invited to explore controversial
topics and share their opinions. Students develop both their
fluency and their cross-cultural awareness as they speak out
in class.
Teaching British and American Literature (3)
The course is designed to study of how to teach British and
American literature in class to enhance students' understanding
of other cultures and languages. The course covers various
reading materials in British and American literature.
Current Events in English (3)
In the course students turn their eyes and ears to the media
as they explore and discuss the news in English. Students
increase both their command of English and their awareness
of the world around them.
Business English (2)
The course is designed to help students build English communication
skills in many different business situations by having them
master functional expressions. In the course various guides
and tips to encourage students to talk, write and do things
in a variety of business situations are introduced.
